Statement of Significance

The Tum Tum tree has significance for its contribution to the character of Frementle. The tree was entered in the Tree Society’s Register of Significant Trees in 1997 and subsequently recognised by the National Trust of Australia (WA) as being a significant tree. It was classified for its contribution to the landscape. It was also considered that while Tum Tum trees are common in cultivation, they are rare in their natural habitat.

Located within a car park area for an adjacent block of residential flats.

History

It is thought that the Tum Tum Tree (Norfok Island Hibiscuis; Lagunaria patersonnii) was planted c. 1950. At some stage, it shaded an outside dining area associated with a restaurant. This area is now a small car park associated with a block of flats.

The tree was entered in the Tree Society’s Register of Significant Trees in 1997 and subsequently recognised by the National Trust of Australia (WA) as being a significant tree. It was classified for its contribution to the landscape. In 1997, it was considered to be in good condition. It was also considered that while Tum Tum trees are common in cultivation, they are rare in their natural habitat.
