Statement of Significance

Byford Primary School has historic value for its association with the developing agricultural and industrial period in the community. In particular the Byford State Brickworks from whence the bricks were supplied for the building of the school.

Physical Description

Byford Primary School is bounded by Clifton, Amy and Mary Streets and South Crescent, fronting Clifton Street. The single storey brick building is representative of early 20th century school buildings in Western Australia. Various extensions have occurred as the need arose to accommodate the children of the local community.

History

When Beenyup townsite was originally surveyed west of the railway within the vicinity of the Recreation Grounds (Briggs Park), a block was set aside for a school. This favoured the location of the majority of the community at the time, but with the State Brickworks sited close to the Blytheswood Estate, Mr Blythe, the owner of the estate, agreed to gift a block to the Government provided a school be built there. Further backing for this location from the Manager of the brickworks, Mr Bradshaw, with the offer to supply and cart bricks to the school site for cost price, had the first classroom built in 1921. The school has seen many additions, the first in 1933 and has continued to expand with the growing community.
