26144 Sites of Significant Houses Dating from the Development of the Augusta Township
Mrs Eatts’ cottage was an early Augusta house, built by Herbert Eatt in 1913, and remained in the family for many years. A plaque has been placed on the brick post on the north boundary of the house as a reminder of the Brennan family and of Patience Eatts.
The original House stood on what is now Lot 42 of Lot 161 Blackwood Ave. It was closely located to a large stump and old weeping willow tree. The site is significant as it represents a prominent location of one of the most influential families in the history of Augusta.
The Eatts property originally consisted of the whole of Lot 161, now subdivided. Herbert Horrice Eatt, built the house known as Mrs Eatts’ cottage in approx. 1913. John Brennan was the father of Patience Eatt, Herberts wife. The Brennan family were one of the first families to settle in Augusta, when the district was really staring to develop. John Brennan was elected to the Augusta District Road Board in 1891, and the family was associated with other well-known families of the time – Higgins, Ellis and McDowell. The Brennans were also familiar with the Davies family. Patience Eatt stayed on living at the house.
