The building is representative of the simple timber framed structures built by the Education Department in rural areas in Western Australia.
The simple structure has a raised timber floor, and a steeply-pitched gabie roof. The building features doublehung
sash windows and weatherboard cladding to dado height and fibro-cement clad lining above. A tail brick chimney breast is on the exterior of one comer of the building.
A plaque at the front of the building commemorates the building as a former school building.
The need for a school in the region is documented on the 19 November 1903, when the Mourambine District Board of Education wrote to the inspector General. Throughout 1904, the Education Department pursued the Lands Department to settle the issue of the school site reserve and finally this was settled on 20 December when the Education Department was advised that the school site was in the process of being gazetted.
On 1 June 1905, and with due ceremony, the school was officially opened on its school site of five acres. As the number of enrolments grew, a request was made to enlarge the school. The additions and improvements to the school began in the last term of 1907, when a start had been made on new quarters for the teacher. In 1908, work was carried out on enlarging the school.
The school functioned as a one-teacher school to 1922 artefthen was upgraded, with a probationer teacher, to assist the head teacher. However, in 1927, it reverted to a one-teacher school. Enrolments continued to fluctuate. During the 1950s, the Education Department policy to consolidate small schools onto one centre was well under way. Attempts to close Popanyining School were vigorously opposed. However, in 1973 it was agreed that the school should be consolidated onto Narrogin and a bus service for the children was organised for the 1974 school year.
Popanyinning was the last school within the Shire of Cuballing to be closed, with the children now being taught at either Pingelly or Narrogin.
