The place is a representative example of the architectural improvisation of structures built to accommodate miners. The place has historic value for its representation of the development of the Australian goldfields and associated social conditions for miners. The place is historically significant .for its relationship with mining operations that took place at Gwalia between 1898-1963, one of the most productive gold mines outside Kalgoorlie.
The building has a timber framed front verandah that- was later enclosed with sheet metal and hessian. The verandah timbers and sheet metal cladding have been recently replaced and, a new concrete step to the verandah has been added.
The interior is reasonably intact with timber floors throughout, pressed metal, timber and hessian linings. The place retains the original oven which has a brick surround and retains an external metal chimney.
The place underwent conservation in 1987, as part of the National Estate Grants Program. The works included: the replacement of timber bracing to the east section of the building; replacement of cgi cladding to the east section of the building, portion of the roof and verandah; replacement of hessian lining; and repair to timber floorboards.
The last occupant's of the building were the Lovi family.
It became known as Art's Place in about 1980 after a local, Mr Arthur DeKlerk, carried out some repairs to structure after it had been damaged in strong winds.
