Statement of Significance

The shops are exceptionally significant for their streetscape value and in representing the early commercial development of Wickepin. The place can demonstrate significant associations with business people and the community of Wickepin since its inception. Tlie place is a fine representative example of shop architecture of the period, of which very few examples remain in the region.

Physical Description

One building incorporates four separate shopfronts. The brick construction has pilasters with horizontal recessed banding marking the structural support columns. The columns are unadorned square timber columns. The corrugated iron roof is a hip construction with the verandah extending from the main roof, over the pavement. Each shop front has a central double door entry recessed. The shopfront glazing extends is continued on the truncated walls of the entry. The shop fronts have been altered in varying degrees, but retain the identity.

History

The shops form a substantial area of commercial development in the then new town of Wickepin. Located between the Hotel (1909) and Post Office(1912), the shops were ideally located for the trade. An early map of the town suggests that the shops were occupied by: (east to west) Elson's garage, Ryan's hairdresser, the Union Bank, and Jago's butcher shop, next along is the Post Office, with another set of four similar shops the other side.
