Statement of Significance

The place was of aesthetic significance as an example of a commercial building constructed during the Inter War period.
It was also significant as a component of the substantially intact Murray Street West streetscape.

Physical Description

Single storey former light industrial building. Street facade altered. Parapet intact. Extent of original fabric not clear from external inspection. Similar to 501 Murray Street. Original facade has been covered, however original windows are extant behind. Awning not original.

History

Demolished 2007. A new building was erected at No. 497-501 Murray Street for Willys WA, motor importers. Willys had been a franchise, previously held by Adams Motors, until this entirely new firm was established. The premises was single storey, with the appearance of two shop fronts (later No. 497 and No. 501) and warehouse space behind. In 1940, No. 497 was the Australian Apple and Pear Marketing Bord, and No. 501 was Michael Malone, motor body builder. In 2007, No. 497 was Stratton Autos, car repair and car hire; and No. 501 was still Malone and Co. (See State Library of Western Australia photo dated c. 2007, 371609PD for the buildings’ appearance.) Both buildings were demolished in 2007.
