It is important for its association with the early exploration of the area and for the establishment of the road system. The permanent pool was an important source of water for teamsters, travellers and shepherds.
It is a deep pool in the main (southern) branch of the Beaufort River. The pool is almost a kilometre in length, varies between 30 and 50 metres in width and is obviously of significant depth. The banks are wooded with a mixture of yate, flooded gum and teatree.
The reserve on the western side of the pool contains a diverse range of vegetations. Large trees - wandoo, flooded gum, marri and yate along with jam, sheoak, banksia and stinkwood. Bushes and shrubs are prolific - parrot bush, york road poison, wattles,
hilbertia, grevillea sps and many others.
The variation in soil type (clay, loam, gravel and sand) accounts for the diversity. Apartfrom several gravel excavations and some isolated timber cutting the reserve remains in its natural state and is an important natural feature of the area.
The area to the east of (and including) the Toojeelup Pool was taken up as a 2000 acrepastoral lease (no. 8834) by merchant William Padbury in the 1870's. The land surrounding the pool was later created a reserve and the southern boundary passed
through the old 141 mile peg - hence the name Six Mile Pool, being 6 miles from the Beaufort Bridge (135 miles from Perth). There is also reference to the name 18 mile Beaufort Pools, this being the distance from Kojonup. A further reserve (589A) was later gazetted on the southern edge of this.
Land around the pool was obviously considered inferior as at the time of Padbury's lease there was no other lease along the Albany Road stretching from Cornwell's establishment until the old 153 mile peg was reached.
An 1800's map showed a track heading east from the pool presumably towards Kunmallup.
