The place represents the beginnings of the school system in the Narembeen District and a way of life no longer practiced. The place is a rare surviving example of a school room of its period and makes a considerable contribution to the school precinct, and the character of the town of Narembeen.
Timber framed with a corrugated iron roof, the weatherboard clad building has a dramatic gable roof extending over a verandah at the entry to the classroom. The brick chimney would have been constructed after it was relocated at this site, from its original Emu Hill site (see RefNo. )
The Emu Hill School was the first in the Narembeen district, prior the railway extending northwards from Kulin. The first marriage in the district took place in the school on 22 February 1915, between Mary Hitchcock and Randolph Hilton. At that time two baptisms were also celebrated by the visiting Kellerberrin Minister. With the advent of the railway line through to the railhead at Narembeen Siding, the subsequent hotel licence and private town at Narembeen, Emu Hill township declined, and the school was relocated to Narembeen.
