Statement of Significance

House, 231 South Street, is a single storey brick and tile house dating from c1930. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Inter-War Art Deco style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 231 South Street is a single storey brick and tile house designed as an example of the Inter-war Art Deco style of architecture. The walls are rendered brick on a painted limestone foundation, with three parallel line brick bands. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with tiles. The asymmetrical façade has the main door under a dropped flat verandah roof that addresses the side. It is supported by rendered columns, and has curved concrete steps leading up to the porch. The other side of the house has another set of timber framed casement windows. There is a curved flat awning over the window with red brick edging, to match the verandah roof. There is a low curved rendered wall with face brick capping at the front boundary line. The iron on the wall matches the decorative iron balustrade of the verandah.

History

This property was offered for sale in June 2005 and is described as 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, with double doors into the lounge, a fireplace and a carport with an adjoining room accessible from Gibson Street. The photo shows rendered masonry dwelling with lines of exposed brick, a hipped tiled roof with a gable end over a protruding front room on the right and a porch on the left. Over the window on the protruding front room there is a flat concrete canopy. Towards the rear of the house on the left hand side is a chimney with a single pot.
