Category D

Some heritage value, but not essential to an understanding of the district. Recommend that the place is not constrained by the Town Planning Scheme. Re-assess the significance of the place when the Inventory is regularly reviewed. Record prior to redevelopment or demolition.

Statement of Significance

The place represents a resourceful method of construction, and a way of life no longer practised.

Physical Description

The walls are constructed of sleepers laid on top of each other in a staggered pattern (like stretcher bond brickwork). The corners are interlocked. The roof is a very low pitched skillion with no overhang, and wire loop ties connect into the walls several layers down from the roof. The floor plan appears to have been rectangular originally, with another room added later and integrated into the original structure. The interior walls are lined with tar paper and cardboard cartons, as recent as 1970s. A stone fire place is still evident in the extensions. The timber floors have all but disappeared. Termite damage is apparent. Most of the external walls are bowing outwards, and the structural adequacy of the place is doubtful

History

Wells was a politician who was amongst a group of early perusers of the land who subsequently took up this land. Later Holmes took over the property and constructed this house of railway sleepers. The sleepers were from the mining railway between Hopetown & Ravensthorpe, and transported from Lake Biddy, the nearest siding.
