Category D

A site without built features, but of some cultural heritage significance to the Shire of Gingin.

Statement of Significance

Fernwood was one of the earliest properties on the Moore River. It is the site of two unmarked graves, those of William and Mary Hatch. The Hatch's held a wine selling license and sold produce to travellers on the Stock Route until the railway diverted the trade.

Physical Description

The Fernwood house is now a ruin.

History

Joseph Harris of Beermullah built Fernwood house for William and Mary Hatch after the original house burnt down in 1893. The original house was a low paper bark roofed one immediately to the west of the present house. William Hatch managed Fernwood for Walter Padbury from 1858. By 1870, he owned Fernwood and he and Mary lived there all their lives and are buried there, William (dec. 5/2/1908) in an unmarked grave 60 yards west of the house under a large bluegum tree. Fernwood was sold to Albert Thomas in 1911, and he sold it to Victor Bach in 1946. The Knight family has owned Fernwood since 1966.
