Statement of Significance

The place makes a significant contribution to the streetscape and townscape of Wickepin. It remains as the only bank in the town, and has always been a bank. It is a fine representative example of its type.

Physical Description

The one storey brick structure has a rendered street facade which forms a decorative parapet which conceals the corrugated iron roof. The residence adjoins the bank chamber and has a front entry on the west side. The bank frontage is classical in proportion and detail. A central design element within the detailed parapet is a pediment with a stucco patterned detail. A small pediment detail is above each window, central either side of the door. The entry is recessed within horizontally banded pilasters with a flat supported canopy with decorative stucco supports. The building is one of a number that the National Bank constructed throughout the country, of the same design. This place remains in its original fabric, except the facade between the pilasters which was originally unpainted face brickwork.

History

During the Depression a number of banks closed, and each town was only allowed to have one bank operating. The National Bank closed at that time. The Bank of Australasia moved from the west end of town and moved into this building. It subsequently became the ANZ Bank. The place has always operated as a bank.
