House, 55 Holland Street is a single storey brick and tile house constructed as a simple variation of the Inter-War Californian Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are face brick (stretcher bond), with limestone footings to the porch. The roof is hipped and tile clad. The windows are timber casement. The porch sits under a separate hip roof and is supported by masonry piers and has a steel balustrade. A face brick chimney is evident. The place has no front boundary fence.
The house is on Lot 1086 and this land was vacant government land owned by the Workers Home Board. In 1940 a house was built. The first occupant was William John Craig. Mrs Craig was still living at the house in 1949 (when post office directory records cease).
The house is part of a group of nine houses (51-67) built by the government for public housing between 1930 and 1940 on this part of Holland Street. Nos. 51 and 67 were demolished and rebuilt/heavily modified in the 1970s, but the rest remain largely intact.
