The place has historical significance as the building was completed and officially opened on June 22, 1899 on the occasion of the anniversary of the Queen's accession and the visit of the Admiral Commanding-In-Chief.
The place is of social significance as it has always been a venue for most important functions entertaining distinguished visitors.

Physical Description

The ballroom is a three-level building constructed of stone and banded brick walls and is covered with a clay tiled roof. Its basic accommodation consists of an entry hall leading into the ballroom which incorporates an upper level gallery, and with a supper room of corresponding size at the lower level. The place includes the ballroom, dining room and other miscellaneous facilities sited adjacent to and within the same grounds as Government House.

History

This building was constructed next to the original Government House (1834) which was demolished during the 1880's. Soon after completion of the new building, extensive alterations were carried out to suit the requirements of the new governor.
