The place was designed by H Beasley during J Grainger's term as Principal Government Architect, in the style of free classicism.
The place has historical significance as the building was completed and officially opened on June 22, 1899 on the occasion of the anniversary of the Queen's accession and the visit of the Admiral Commanding-In-Chief.
The place is of social significance as it has always been a venue for most important functions entertaining distinguished visitors.
The ballroom is a three-level building constructed of stone and banded brick walls and is covered with a clay tiled roof. Its basic accommodation consists of an entry hall leading into the ballroom which incorporates an upper level gallery, and with a supper room of corresponding size at the lower level. The place includes the ballroom, dining room and other miscellaneous facilities sited adjacent to and within the same grounds as Government House.
This building was constructed next to the original Government House (1834) which was demolished during the 1880's. Soon after completion of the new building, extensive alterations were carried out to suit the requirements of the new governor. Major additions were constructed in 1898, these included a dining room, supper room and billiard room. During World War II Government House was used as government offices.
