This property has historical interest only as the location of a now demolished heritage place. The existing development on the site has little significance.
Historic building / structures demolished.
Jenkin Street was originally named By-the-Sea Road. It was renamed in 1909/10 for Reverend J G Jenkin of the South Fremantle Methodist Church.
House, 38 Jenkin Street was built c. 1900. In 1900, Patrick McCall, a carter, was listed as the occupant of the cottage owned by A Ahearn.
The house was owned by Catherine Seaton between c. 1905 and c. 1925. Patrick McCall continued to live in the house until at least 1915.
A diagram dated 1914 shows House, 38 Jenkin Street (then 83 By-the-Sea Road) as a large weatherboard house with a full length front verandah. There were several galvanised iron buildings attached to the rear, as well as a large detached weatherboard and corrugated iron building in the back yard.
In 1924/25, Juanita and Clarence Ahern were listed as the owner and occupant respectively. Frances and William Hall were the owners and occupants between c. 1928 and c. 1950 (Frances was listed as the sole owner from 1934/35). A diagram dated 1954 shows the same plan form as that in 1907.
After a brief period of ownership by Alfred Hale, House, 38 Jenkin Street was bought by Thomas and Cecilia Humes. The Humes retained ownership until the early 1970s.
The house was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
In 1982 the house was bought by Arnott Mills and Ware and aerial photographs indicate that it was demolished shortly after for truck parking.
This place was included in the "Heritage Study South Fremantle", prepared by John Taylor Architects, for the City of Fremantle, June 1993.
During the 2019 Annual Update of the Municipal Inventory and Heritage List the heritage significance of this place was reviewed and it was found that the heritage listing referred to a building or structure that had legally been demolished in the past. It also found that the existing buildings and structures on the site do meet the threshold for inclusion on the Heritage List.
On 25 July 2019 Fremantle Council resolved to remove this place from the Heritage List and to change the Municipal Heritage Inventory category to Historic Record Only to record the earlier history of the site.
This property has been redeveloped since the heritage elements were demolished and it is unlikely that any significant undisturbed archaeological material remains on site.
