The site of the former steam powered saw and flour mill has archaeological potential.
At the rear of 29 Market Street is the site of the first steam driven mill in the former Swan River Colony. The building has since been demolished as have the wall foundations that once marked the site.
Important historical site of first steam powered timber and flour mill in Swan River Colony in 1839-1843 (note these dates differ from the Hocking & Blackwell 1987 study). Records show that it was still operating in 1863. Machinery was transported to Guildford to Cowan property. Brick wall foundations once marked the site. There is also an open drain (previously a small channel that allowed boat access to the mill from the Swan River, boats would be loaded up with flour and timber for the trip back to Perth and Fremantle).
