Significant but not essential to an understanding of the history of the district: photographically recorded prior to any major redevelopment or demolition.

Statement of Significance

The site is important for its association with the development of recreational activities in
the district.

Physical Description

Situated on the SW edge of the then (and current) golf course the original clubhouse was
a shed constructed with bush timber uprights, sawn jarrah bearers and clad with
galvanised iron. It faces east with 2/3 rds of the eastern side open. On the north/east
corner (which is enclosed) is a galvanised iron chimney.

History

The other major event of 1934 was the laying out of the Woodanilling Golf course. The
National Bank Manager from Katanning, Nicholas supervised the building and laying out
of the course on part of Jack Fidock's property.

A story is told how Nicholas on one of his trips out to the Woodanilling branch, stayed at
the hotel for a drink after work. When he left to go home he forgot to take with him all
the takings which were in bags on the bar. Many hours later he returned in a very
disturbed and agitated state. Fortunately the publican had noticed the bags and put them
behind the bar for safekeeping.

The Woodanilling Golf Club had a membership of 40 when Mrs Compton drove off the
first ball on the opening day on May 5, 1934. Her husband, Bill Compton, was the
secretary and John Fidock the foundation president. The Legislative Council member
Hon. Alex Thompson officially opened the new course.

The club went into recess during the war years and resumed in 1946.

To date there have been six life members elected - J Dinwoodie, I. Wilhelm, L. Treloar,
G. Terlich, Mrs Anne Wilhelm and Mrs Edith Braund.

In January 1958 tenders were called for the construction of a clubhouse at the golf course.
This was opened in early May of that year.
