The building forms part of the remnant building stock which makes up the historic town's fabric.

Physical Description

Single-storey painted brick and slate house built in the 1890s with full length bullnose verandah. Original details include slate roof, lathe plaster ceilings, jarrah picket fence dividing No. 25.The slate roof was restored in 1979 and remains in a good condition.

In 1994, the bullnose veranda being replaced with a new bullnose of a similar design to the original, and a tennis court was removed in 1998.

The original front door was also removed, and has been replaced with a design similar to the original.

The house had stained glass at the front door but had been removed.

Various internal renovations have been carried out in the last forty years. Lath and plaster ceilings in the corridor and front bedroom were removed due to deterioration, however are still intact in the front lounge, the main lounge and the dining room.

The original ceiling rose in the front bedroom and the lounge room remain intact, however the ceiling rose in the front bedroom has deteriorated and has been replaced with the original design.

The only remains of the original orchard is the currant grape growing on the pergola to the rear of the house. The vine is of a poor condition with only a circle of bark remaining.

History

Building construction commenced in 1896 by Major James Munday, Headmaster of Guildford Primary School. House constructed on large block. It was built in the shape of a square originally with an outdoor kitchen. The Mundays made several additions as their family grew. Mrs Beatrice Fenny who was the youngest child of the original family. Property fronted Market St with rear boundary to Swan River.

House named 'Fermoy' after home town of owner's mother near Cork. Dr Ferguson Stewart leased the property from Munday and opened up a private hospital. He later purchased the place.

Later, the property was also owned by M. Huddlestone, veterinary surgeon (son of late Archdeacon Huddlestone) from 1959 to 1976.
