Statement of Significance

House, 20 Swanbourne Street, is a single storey brick and iron house dating from 1907. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 20 Swanbourne Street is a single storey brick and iron house designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are rendered. The roof is hipped and clad with zincalume. There is a chimney evident to the back of the house. The façade is symmetrical with a central front door with side fanlights flanked on either side by timber framed windows or doors. The verandah has a separate dropped iron roof supported by timber posts. There is a rendered brick and steel picket fence to the front boundary line.

History

The rate books show Lot 1034 to be a vacant lot in 1905/6, but a cottage is listed in 1907/8. Lot 1034 was subsequently split into 2 blocks, but the cottage was on number 42, later renumbered to 20.
The house was for sale in 1983 and it was advertised as having timber floors, a cast iron fireplace with side tiles and a central arch in the hallway. The house had a tile roof, painted brick side walls with a fibro sleep-out and timber on the gable ends.
