Statement of Significance

The Shark Bay Shire Office has considerable social significance for its association with local government in the district. Further the place makes an important contribution to the local community as the Shire library. The building is an important part of the townscape given its simple style, prominent location and use of Coquina shell blocks.

Physical Description

The Shark Bay Shire Office is a small, simple rectangular building of Coquina shell block construction. The building has a shallow pitched skillion asbestos roof and a separate verandah roof to the front (east) elevation supported on metal poles. There is shadow line infill between the verandah and the roof with the name of the building displayed in black capital letters. Windows are timber framed and casement in style with the main entry to the building being via a single door off centre. Evidence of extensions and alterations includes the infill under two windows to the east facade and a noticeable break in the shell block wall.

History

The first Shark Bay Shire Office was built in 1904. (Place No. 15) The current Shark Bay Shire Office was constructed in 1968. A major addition, constructed in the 1970s, was sympathetic, incorporating shell blocks and matching the original style. The building also incorporates the library.
