The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of considerable cultural heritage significance in its own right within the context of Fremantle and its conservation is a priority.

Statement of Significance

House, 82 Marine Terrace, is a typical limestone, brick and iron double storey house dating from c 1920. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of a substantial house in the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

82 Marine Terrace is a double storey, limestone, brick and iron house with a symmetrical façade. The bottom storey walls are limestone with rendered quoins, the second storey walls are rendered. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The façade is symmetrical. Both levels have a central front door and double hung sash windows. The two storey verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof supported on chamfered timber posts with simple timber balustrade to both the top and bottom stories. It wraps around one side of the building. There is a rendered corbelled chimney evident. There is a limestone and iron wall to the front boundary line.

History

In 1885, William Chamberlain, a ship builder, built a cottage on the lot. The cottage was located at the back of the lot, with its address as Howard Street. By 1889, sheds had also been built on the lot. In 1895, a portion of the allotment was annotated ‘boatyard and sheds’.

A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated c. 1920 shows vacant land facing Marine Terrace. To the back of the lot, there was a large brick, stone and galvanised iron structure/s that covered a considerable area. One stone section was marked ‘shed’. These would have been the buildings associated with the boat building yard established in the 1890s.

The sheds were demolished in the late 1930s, and it is likely that house, 82 Marine Terrace dates from this time, though it might have been built in the 1920s.

In 1952, the property was re-vested to the Crown. It had been owned by Guiseppe Maffina since 1939, following William Chamberlain’s death. The property was re-issued to Mr Maffina in 1953.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, the place operated as a boarding house. In 1966, the house was described as being a ‘brick and stone structure in good repair’. It was operated by the Maffina family during this time.

This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
