Former Sadlier’s Customs Agency, 36 Henry Street is a good example of a commercial building dating from the first decades of the twentieth century that forms part of a group of similar places and makes a contribution to the streetscape of the Old Port City of Fremantle.
The place is of social significance as evidenced by its classification by the National Trust.
The place was been modified and adapted for use as residential apartments during 1992 and fabric from this development is of little heritage significance.
36 Henry Street comprises single storey stone and brick and stucco decorative façade featuring arches (window openings and drive through) and triangular pediments with circular openings. Either side of the driveway are attached two storey apartments constructed 1992. The driveway and central arcade extends through to Pakenham Street where there is a face brick entrance to the apartments.
A Heritage Assessment was prepared in Jan 2010 by the City of Fremantle for a DA submission to Council for retrospective approval at unit 5/36 Henry Street for alterations to the garage doors, removal of a wall and the external stairs.
Prior to the warehouse, the lot featured a duplex pair of cottages and stores. Mr William Dalgety Moore purchased the lot in 1881, and built a new warehouse on Lot 86 in 1883 (No. 36). In 1891 a machinery warehouse was built on Lot 85 (no 34). The warehouse formed part of a complex of buildings which ran from Henry St through to Pakenham St. W D Moore & Co.'s Hardware Stores operated on Henry St from 1862, leasing the WA Bank building.
Prior to 1992 renovations, the building was the Edge Skateboard Rink and Shields' Warehouse. It was converted to 3 x 2 storey apartments by Brian Klopper in 1992.
Currently (2002), residential apartments.
A Heritage Assessment was prepared in Jan 2010 by the City of Fremantle for a DA submission to Council for retrospective approval at unit 5/36 Henry Street for alterations to the garage doors, removal of a wall and the external stairs.
Medium degree of integrity (original intent partially clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability).
Medium degree of authenticity with some original fabric remaining.
(These statements based on street survey only).
