Physical Description

A single-storey brick and iron villa built during the Gold Boom Era of the 1890s. The front of the house is Flemish bond whilst the side walls are of cavity brick. The house has a double curve verandah around a double brick gable with timber finial. The front has a faceted bay with French doors flanked by a pair of double hung sash windows. Flooring is wide timber flanking, deep skirtings. Built as a gentleman's residence with nothing to spare. House is largely intact with original details of vents, cornices, ceiling roses, fireplaces etc. House is hidden behind a high brick wall.

History

The original leadlighting is missing. The fanlight and front windows were hand decorated in landscape themes and bird studies. The original plantings have been removed. The grounds once had plum trees which fruited in abundance, citrus, loquat and grape vines. The house was built in 1897 for Douglas Jones daughter Mrs Edwards as a wedding present. Douglas Jones was the owner of the Guildford Timber Yard. The house was probably named 'The Cliffe' after a goldmine owned by Douglas Jones.
