The shops are exceptionally significant for their streetscape value and in representing the early commercial development of Wickepin. The place can demonstrate significant associations with business people and the community of Wickepin since its inception. The place is a fine representative example of shop architecture of the period, of which very few examples remain in the region.
One building incorporates four separate shopfronts. The brick construction has pilasters with horizontal recessed banding marking the structural support columns. The columns are the originals still in place with concrete bases, the chamfered square timber columns have decorative timber patterned bracket details. The corrugated iron roof is a hip construction with the verandah extending from the main roof, over the pavement. Each shop front has a recessed central double door entry. The shop fronts have had minimal alterations but retain their identity.
The shops form a substantial area of commercial development in the then new town of Wickepin. Located immediately west of the Post Office(1912), the shops were ideally located for the trade. An early map of the town suggests that the shops were occupied by: (east to west from the Post Office) W Bailey's tailor shop, the chemist shop run by Mrs Honora Lyons who was the first Western Australian woman chemist, Miss Wilson, dressmaker, and the bootmaker Mr Laplau. Behind these shops, was one of the town bake-houses. The functions and owners of the shops have changed over the years, and the four shops are currently vacant.
