• The place is highly valued by the Western Australian hockey community as the location for international, national, state and elite and development level hockey matches, the administration of Hockey WA operations and development programs, and Hockey Australia's High Performance Program (formerly run by the Western Australian Institute for Australian Sport).
• The place is partly associated with the development of women at state, national and international level hockey in Western Australia, including the Olympic greats Rechelle Hawkes and Jackie Pereira, both of which have been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
• The place is valued by the Curtin University Hockey Club as the club’s home turf.
• The original design of the administration building at Perth Hockey Stadium, Curtin University by architecture firm Hobbs, Winning, Leighton and Partners reflects the original design intent and contributes to the aesthetic qualities of the Curtin campus at Bentley.
The place comprises a purpose-built administration building, two synthetic hockey turf pitches and associated players facilities and stadium seating. The main building and grandstand faces onto the blue Turf 1. Located to the northwest of Turf 1, the green Turf 2 has a smaller grandstand located on the western side. The venue holds up to 6,000 spectators across the two fields.
In 1977 the Western Australian Hockey Association and Western Australian Womens Hockey Assocation combined in the bid for Commonwealth assistance for the construction of a combined hockey stadium. The joint Men's and Women's facility was to be sited on the campus of the W.A. Institute of Technology (now Curtin University).
Architects Hobbs, Winning, Leighton and Partners were commissioned to design the field and facilities.
Perth Hockey Stadium was officially opened on 8 April 1979, the first of its type in the southern hemisphere. The Esanda World Hockey Tournament was held from 20-29 April 1979, Australia hosting teams from Canada, France, India, Netherlands, Great Britain, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand and Pakistan.
The Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) was established to train athletes for Olympic sports in 1984, the same year the Australian Institute for Sport (AIS) established the first development program outside of Canberra with transfer of the Hockey Unit to the Perth Hockey Stadium. This led to a building programme to expand the existing facilities to house the WAHA and WAWHA, the Stadium Council and the AIS Hockey Unit in the one location at Perth Hockey Stadium.
Perth Hockey Stadium underwent a major expansion and renovation in 2002 in preparation of the 2002 Women’s Hockey World Cup.
In 2014, Hockey Australia undertook full responsibility for the management of the former WAIS/AIS Hockey Unit in Perth. The re-branded High Performance Program in Perth incorporates both the men’s and women’s hockey training programs, national squads, and HA scholarship holders.
