Statement of Significance

It is important for its association with pioneering families.

Physical Description

It is a creek flowing only in winter, being situated east of Cartmeticup near the 'Glencoe'
homestead.

It is also often spelt Yelyellan.

It rises to the north east of Glencoe and flows initially in a southerly direction before
veering easterly near Oxley Road and flows SE into Coblinine River which feeds the
Dumbleyung Lake from the south.

Initially a source of fresh water, (wells and springs) the gully is saline with summer
seepage. Much of the creek area has been re-vegetated in the past decade.

Several natural watering points are known to have supplied fresh water for early pioneers
- a well just below Location 113 (pictured) and a water hole in William Cronin's old
location about 1km downstream.

The former is a timbered well about 3 metres square. Remnants of a pump, water tank
and garden (fenced off area) are close to the well which was overflowing in early May
2000. The Cronin water hole which is marked on old maps is no longer in existence.
However remnants of jam fence posts and rails are still evident on the west bank of the
creek.

History

In 1875 Samuel Blackmore and his wife, Catherine Elizabeth, took up Location 113 of 40
acres on Yelyellan Gully which they named 'Bamboo'.

The property was later acquired by William (Bill) Cronin from 'Glencoe'. In 1956,
Cronin's farm 'Yelyelling' of 340 acres which included Blackmore's original selection
(Location 113) was purchased by Tom Catling and his family. Blackmore died on the
property and is buried in the gully below the old homestead site.
