Winship House has historic significance as one of the older houses in Denham and for its association with Billy Hughes, a local identity in Shark Bay. Its small scale, simple form and use of construction materials make it characteristic of the type of building in that era.
Set low off Mainland Street in a small hollow and surrounded by trees and vegetation, Winship House is a small timber framed house clad with vertical corrugated iron and fibro to the walls. The building has a combination hipped and gable corrugated iron roof which extends to cover the front verandah. Supported on timber posts, the verandah still has a timber floor. Part of the verandah is enclosed with fibro. One of the original small four pane timber framed windows has been replaced with a french door to the front facade.
The original builder and owner of Winship House was William (Billy) Hughes, a pearler, carpenter and Justice of the Peace, after whom Hughes Street in Denham was named. The house derives its name from a subsequent owner, Mrs Tuppy Winship, who with her husband, leased the Post Office for many years.
