The site is significant for its association with early method of transport of people, produce
and stock.
It is the largest of the three Government dams in the shire with a capacity of about 1500
cubic yards. It is situated in the long, narrow reserve on the north side of Oxley Road,
being about 200 metres west of the Bullock Hills Hall site (Woolkabin School) and about
150 metres north of Oxley Road. It is close (50 metres) to the northern edge of the
reserve.
It is filled with a drain entry on the east (it appears to be in the original gully) as gully
washaways are evident on the southern edge of the dam.
A standpipe is on the south edge with a 2" galvanised pip (long since disused) leading to
the dam.
When inspected in May 2000 before the first rains it was about 1/3 full
One of a series of dams in the shire erected by the State Government to provide water for
travellers, teamster and drovers before the widespread introduction of motor vehicles.
When sinking the dam in the spring of 1907, it was reported that the contractor struck a
soak and water was flowing at 200 gallons per day.
