Sheed's Store is a central part of the streetscape of Hannan Street and makes an important contribution to the visual character of this streetscape with its verandah and balcony and rendered masonry parapet. The site is representative of retailing at the turn-of-the-century and is significant for its form and continuity of use. The value of the place is enhanced by its proximity to similar structures along the street.
A two-storey building with a decorative pedimented parapet and a verandah and balcony across the facade that extends over the pavement. The shop front and shop have been altered. The verandahs are recent additions. There are extensive additions at the rear.
The building was originally constructed of hessian before 1900 (between 1898 and 1900) for J. W. Fimister, Mayor of Kalgoorlie. The building was upgraded to corrugated iron and finally to a two-storey stone and brick structure. Underneath the back of the building was a 30,000 gallon water tank that was converted to a storeroom and has since been filled in during renovations.
After 1900, David Sheed bought the building and sold hardware, wholesale and retail groceries, general house furnishings, spirits and wines. The motto of the shop was "Quality is the test of Cheapness". It expanded to become one of the leading enterprises on the Goldfields, opening branches in Boulder and Fremantle. The business was a family affair and of the five Sheed generations that lived in Kalgoorlie, three operated the store. The business was sold in 1983" (Laurie, 1995: 11).
